How to Handle Damage & Claims as a Host

By Belo Rentals · Updated June 2026

Even careful hosts eventually deal with damage. Because claims are the host's responsibility on Belo Rentals, having a clear, documented process makes resolution faster and fairer. This is general information, not legal or insurance advice.

Document everything, every trip

Your best protection starts before a problem exists: timestamped pre- and post-trip photos of the entire vehicle, odometer, and fuel/charge on every booking. When damage appears, you can show exactly what changed and when.

Act promptly and stay factual

If a car returns damaged, photograph the damage immediately from multiple angles, note the date and time, and document your communication. Keep the tone factual and professional — clear records resolve disputes better than argument.

  • Photograph damage from multiple angles
  • Record dates, times, and mileage
  • Save all messages and the rental agreement
  • Get repair estimates in writing

Work with your insurer

Contact your own insurer to understand your coverage and the claim process — remember that Belo does not provide host insurance or physical-damage protection. The coverage you confirmed before listing is what applies.

Prevent the next one

Patterns in incidents often point to fixable causes: unclear expectations, thin documentation, or the wrong guests. Tighten your handoff walkthrough, keep documenting, and set travel and mileage limits you're comfortable with.
