What Insurance Massachusetts Car Hosts Need

By Belo Rentals · Updated June 2026

Insurance is the most important thing to get right before you host. On Belo Rentals, hosts maintain their own insurance and are responsible for claims — Belo does not provide host insurance or physical-damage protection. This guide explains what to check with your own insurer. It is general information, not insurance or legal advice.

Confirm your policy permits rental/marketplace use

Most personal auto policies are written for personal use and may exclude renting your vehicle to others. Before you list, ask your insurer — in writing — whether your policy permits rental or marketplace use, and what happens to coverage during a rental. Never assume; get the answer documented.

Understand the gaps

If your personal policy excludes rental use, a claim during a rental could be denied. Ask your agent about commercial or rental-specific coverage options that fit how you plan to host, and how often you intend to rent the vehicle.

  • Liability during a rental period
  • Physical damage / collision during a rental
  • Coverage while the car is delivered or stored
  • What documentation an insurer requires after an incident

What Belo does and does not provide

Belo Rentals provides the marketplace, e-signed rental agreements, and payment processing. Belo does not provide host insurance, physical-damage protection, or claim coverage, and nothing on the platform should be read as a promise that you are fully protected. The coverage is yours to arrange and maintain.

Protect yourself with documentation

Take clear, timestamped pre-trip and post-trip photos of the entire vehicle for every booking, keep your registration and inspection current, and retain records of each trip. Good documentation is your best friend if a dispute or claim ever arises.
